Nicaragua
Nicaragua started with several problems, so I had to do several inquiries and many phone calls with the banks concerning the stolen credit cards, I received the receipts of the second credit card and now the loss amounted to approximately 3’600 CHF. Travel money for 4 months! I hope the thief had a lot of fun in his visits to the casino, at Tommy Hilfiger, Mc Donalds and in the many computer shops. The whole story then struck well on my health and the first days were pretty shitty, to express it gentle. After this first period of a down I could fortunately gather up again and restarted the journey again with joy. Our first stop was on the „Isla de Ometepe“, which is located on the largest lake in Nicaragua and offered a small but yet pretty untouched paradise. The massive volcano Concepción perched majestically on the island, and there are some small eco-friendly farms who produce local products and try to live actively in harmony with the nature. And so we found a nice spot in one of these simple farms and stayed a few nights for about $ 2 in a tent. Our further travel led us to the colonial city of Granada, which awaited us with colorful houses, cafes and galleries with beautiful
green courtyards. Another stop we set at the „Laguna de Apoyo“, a volcanic lake which is popular among locals for weekend getaways, and so we had the pleasure to enjoying the salsa rhythms side by side with the locals right into the night. Surfing and HangLoose we found afterwards at „Playa Gigante“ on the west coast of the country. The small village is still very untouched and the people here live mainly from fishing and animal husbandry, which meant, we shared the road here with pigs, cows, horses and dogs. The swell was massive and the sea spat around 3 meters high waves with barrels out, it was great! In early March Jasi started to join us in Managua and we traveled further north to Léon. The small and friendly colonial town awaited us with the active volcano Télica, which we hiked and we even saw magma in the incredibly impressive 120m deep crater in which it rumbled and hissed! Basically, we wanted to continue our onward travel further north to El Salvador, but due to political unrest and a massive increase in the murder rate in the last few months, we decided against the risk and we will further travel to Panama and from there by boat to Colombia. An exciting future!
