Sea, Andes and Dogs
After our arrival by boat we started our journey in the north of Colombia in Capurganá. Since Pia got only two weeks to spend with us before traveling to Canada, we decided to shorten the travel time from 12 hours by bus to 1 1/2 hrs by plane. What we didn’t knew when we booked the ticket – we booked a chartered plane to Medellín. We had a private propeller plane, which started on a gravel runway on which a few minutes before were still people riding on their bikes, it was an adventure! Always and everywhere are the military people who care with machine gun and a stern look for law and order. Medellín surprised us then as a modern city in which even the taxis can be ordered with an iPhone app. Especially the region around El Poblado impressed us with chic cafes and shops and in Santo Domingo we could even feed our homesickness with a Swiss mountain railway, which led us to the Parque Biblioteca España. During The Semana Santa, one of the most important traditional events of the year, we stayed in the small mountain village of Barichara, which not only offered tremendously friendly people and beautiful architecture, but also an aggressive dog that apparently didn’t like me much and bit me in the leg. Bleeding heavily I was then driven to the village hospital where some nurses patched
me up the Colombian way. Some days I hopped as Humpelbein through the streets before I felt better again. When we reached the second time Medellín, we all knew that the parting from Pia was near and so we enjoyed the last few days together in an apartment. It was nice to have some kind of a home after 10 months of travelling, at least for some days. The parting for me was tremendously difficult, after all, we will no longer see each other for 4 months. With tears in my eyes, the journey continued towards the south together with Jasi. Here we discovered the ugliest city in Colombia – Manizales. The city attracts mainly the visitors by its surrounding volcanoes. Here we found out that the nearby Nevado del Ruiz volcano is at the warning level yellow, which means that seismic activity is measured. Before the state changes to orange (shortly before the outbreak), we decided to continue to travel to Salento. Here we found a beautiful mountain landscape in the Andes. The highlight was a 6 hour hike through the Valle de Cocora, in which we were accompanied by a friendly dog from the small village. Here we discovered in the mystical fog landscape not only the 60 meters high wax palms, but also hummingbirds and a Nasua. Colombia offers pure adventure, let’s see what’s up in the following 3 weeks.

Ganz dicke Umarmung
Gilla
