On the paths of the Incas

After a 57 hour bus journey from Colombia to Peru the country awaited us with sunshine, beach and Pia. To my delight, she decided to spend her last part of the trip in South America. After several days of surfing and relaxing in Mancora another 47 hours bus ride took us to Cusco. The city surprised us with its charm, beautiful architecture, markets and friendly locals. Here Jasi left us to Bolivia and Pia and I started a 5-day hike to Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca city. Our group was international and very likable and so we walked the 8-10 hours per day mostly talking and laughing. Despite good mood, the Hike was enormously challenging, so we reached already on the first day around 3800 m above sea level and on the second day around 4600. The height was difficult for our bodies, and so we drank and chewed coca leaves like the locals. We spent the nights in tents, which was pretty cold at temperatures around the freezing point, especially because we were no longer accustomed to the cold temperatures after approximately 11 months of traveling in the summer. But we were

rewarded with a beautiful mountain landscape surrounded by snow and glaciers. The second day took us back into lower areas and thus in the green forest where farmers planted avocados, coffee, lemons and bananas. On the third day we were not only able to wash our tired bodies but also relax in the hot springs. On the fourth day we reached Aquas Caliente, the so called base camp to the Machu Picchu. The small village was dotted with hostels, restaurants and of course tourists. Morning at 04:45 clock we went on to climb around 3000 steps to the entrance to one of the 7 wonders of the world. Because there was my birthday that day, I was surprised by our group with lemon and chocolate cake and a Happy Birthday, it was great! The walk through the ancient Inca city was hugely impressive and we marveled at the beautiful view and the beautiful architecture. A great view, we then found on the Machu Picchu Mountain, which is 1000 meters above the city, and brought a beautiful completion of these 5 days. Tired and happy we returned by train and bus back to Cusco. Next stop: Bolivia.
