Java – The Island of contrasts
The island of Java is sobering and fascinating at the same time, the strong contrasts are reflected in the country and people. Rich and poor people live close together and industrial development is noticeable as well as the exercise of traditions and religion and Megacities share the land with beautiful natural surroundings. Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, which is affectionately called by its inhabitants „Big Durian“, is characterized by traffic jams and air pollution. A visit to the Old Town Kota shows us dilapidated colonial buildings and poverty. In the sailing port
Sunda Kelapa we discover masked figures which load the sailboats on narrow wooden planks with cement bags or unload fruit and wood from the outer islands. The journey takes us west to the small surfer village Cimaja where we meet wonderful people, enjoy the ride of the waves and relax. The start of Ramadan, leads us into the world of the Muslim faith with their chants and rituals of the surrounding mosques. The last days we spent in the sleepy town Cibodas where we discover the beautiful natural landscapes of the National Park, the Botanical Garden and the Gunung Mas tea plantation.
