Costa Rica. From heaven to hell

After a short three-day pit stop in Switzerland in which we visited our family, friends and the upcoming winter we were happy to return back to the summer. Our first destination in Central America was Costa Rica, or as it is called here, the Switzerland of Central America. This mainly due to their neutrality, but as we noted here, people are also more closed, the prices are high and many landscapes would also fit in the Swiss countryside. San José awaited us with many street vendors, musicians, and loud lottery sellers, just as we imagined Central America! A little more peace we found in the small village of Uvita on the Pacific coast. The water temperatures coincide here with the air temperature of 27 degrees, and the people are relaxed and friendly. And the first time we were able to use our knowledge of Spanish, which my sister learned us for one year. More action we found afterwards in Santa Teresa and Tamarindo where we found great surfing conditions, nice people, dancing nights, karaoke and some hangovers. In Monteverde, I fought then my fear of heights and raced at top speed attached on a steel cable called as Ziplining through the

cloud forests, only Superman could do that better! But the cloudforests were beautiful even on closer inspection, due to the constant fog, the trees here are mossy and on the crowns of the trees grow sun loving plants. The mystique of these forests is impressive. The onward journey led us then to the Caribbean coast of the country to Puerto Viejo. It all started great, we discovered the weirdest animals we’ve ever seen – sloths. As if in slow motion, they moved in front of us along a path, even with a baby on board – the scene could have taken place in „Lord of the Rings“. Also, the permanent reggae groove in the small Hippi Town made us enjoy the beach and the sunsets. But as nice as anything started so bad ended our time in paradise; first we caught a tropical virus that tore us completely out of action. Slow as the sloths we moved from A to B and back to bed. Even worse was the situation when we realized that our cash and three credit cards were stolen from our room. According to the last settlement, the thieves shopped for about CHF 1’400 at my expenses. A dearly we pay for. The journey continues in one of the poorest countries of Central America – Nicaragua.
