The jungle of Bukit Lawang
The eight-hour drive via Brestagi and Medan takes us to the small village of Bukit Lawang. The houses here wind their way along the river called Bohorok and the lush trees and plants sprout leaves in all shades of green. We meet up with locals who are about to offer kindness and joy barely. During a visit to a market everyone speak to us and despite language differences they explain all worth knowing with a smile and with hands and
feet. A two-day trek takes us to the Gunung Leuser National Park and the natural habitat of the Orang Utans. Eight hours we are led through hilly jungle area fascinated by the great apes, Thomas langurs, pig-tailed macaques and Siamang to watch and admire. We spent the night at a river mouth in the jungle. More than ever, we enjoy the simplicity of life, the sharing and humor with the locals and the energy of nature that surrounds us.
